EC701 : Tiriti-based Early Childhood Education
This course discusses the status of Aotearoa (New Zealand) as a bicultural country, which is grounded in its founding documents, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and The Treaty of Waitangi. The importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles and practices are outlined in Aotearoa legislation and in other relevant policies. In early childhood education, it is the teacher’s responsibility to ensure Māori identity, language and culture are incorporated into everyday teaching and learning, as guided by the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Whāriki (Ministry of Education, 2017). In this course you explore what early childhood teachers need as a knowledge base in order to implement bicultural teaching practice in their early childhood settings.
